Gamma Sigma Sigma was founded when a group of university students from eight different colleges came together in New York City in 1952 to establish a nationally-based service organization. In the fall of 2005, LaTasha Smith, a graduate student who had been a member of Gamma Sigma Sigma at George State University, started a colony at JMU. Our colony grew and became an official chapter in spring of 2007. Gamma Sigma Sigma is the only multicultural community service
sorority at JMU and continues to hold true to its ideals of service, friendship, and equality as it grows. We have had four pledge classes and currently have 27 active members.
Our purpose: To assemble college and university students in the spirit of service to humanity and to develop friendships among students of all races and creeds.
Our motto: "Unity in Service."
